In 1879, the miller Johann Georg Berg founded the cereal products factory ‘Nährmittelfabrik Georg Berg’ in Schriesheim. He quickly expanded the initial range of green spelt and spelt products to include oat flakes. The company founder also recognised early on that his customers wanted baking agents that would make it easier to produce tasty baked goods of consistently high quality. Focussing on this growing demand, he produced ‘Bergmalz’, the first malt baking agent for bread rolls.

‘Bergmalz’ quickly became a success and the innovative baking agent was awarded a gold medal for outstanding performance at the 1911 bakery trade fair in Cologne. Encouraged by this achievement and eager to meet the demand from his customers for more innovative baking ingredients, Georg Johann Berg launched ‘Maximaltin’ on the market in the 1920s. This advance in bread roll baking agents, which were still quite basic then, also struck a chord with the times and was just as enthusiastically received by bakeries as the ‘Bergin’ bread baking agent. To this day, BERG BACK, which is now part of the JUCHEM GROUP, is still synonymous with innovative baking agents that are in great demand.
